I have written only one news release before (for an internship I had with Aiken Regional Medical Centers).  That one was not difficult at all, because I was familiar with the hospital and the event we were promoting.  As soon as I knew I had to write one, my mind automatically started organizing what information would need to be included and the order it would in which it would need to be presented.  Of course, I worked under a PR person who made sure I was on the right track, corrected me when I needed it, and told me how to format the press release before sending it to various media outlets.

But writing this one from scratch is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be.  Tiffany Sellers and I decided that our topic would be the Clemson PRSSA chapter.  Since neither of us is in that organization, we must look up information about it, and decide on an angle for the news release.  I guess this is one major difference between working for a PR firm and being the PR person for a particular organization.  When you work as an employee of only one company, you know it like the back of your hand.  But when you work for a PR firm, you have many different clients and must know all about them, their background, and their goals and values before you can know how to promote them.
